“Studying is a strategy. Grades are a habit.” – Kim Il-yeop, a Math Specialist in Daegu Some say grades are talent, while others say they are effort. But I say this: grades are ultimately the result of ‘strategy’ and ‘habit.’ I am not simply someone who teaches problem-solving. I am a ‘mentor-type’ math teacher who accurately diagnoses where students stumble and why those patterns recur, teaching them how to survive in real-world situations. My classes are sharp, but the atmosphere is cheerful. I never miss the facts, but I ask questions to help students realize things on their own. More important than the correct answer is enabling students to explain in their own words why that answer was derived from that specific point. That is what I consider true skill. I hope that through the tool of mathematics, students learn how to overcome their own limitations. Therefore, rather than simply teaching “memorizing formulas,” I have students read the hidden structure of coordinates in the shape of a cubic function, grasp the curve of a graph using derivatives, and construct equations on their own using definite integral conditions. All of this is not about ‘problem-solving techniques,’ but about overhauling the very way of thinking. And most importantly, I am a teacher who believes I can change the life of each and every student. I work together with students who have crumbled under the weight of their studies to find a way to rise again, and I conduct classes that go beyond just good grades to make them proud of themselves. I have many names—‘Fact-Boosting Teacher,’ ‘Teacher Yeop’s Math’—but the core is one. “I will ensure that no child, no matter who they are, ever gives up.” Teacher Kim Il-yeop will be with you as you grow.
