Hello. This is Teacher Byeolsatang. Having worked as a librarian for 5 years and as a math tutor and reading instructor for elementary, middle, and high school students for over 7 years, I have seen many students find their reading time insufficient as they advance to higher grades. However, the conclusion I reached after observing countless students for over 7 years is that the less reading time there is, the more the power of memorization and comprehension weakens in subjects such as English, math, science, and social studies. I can confidently say that students who lack the time to read to grasp the "meaning between the lines," "think," and understand the deep meanings will inevitably face significant difficulties in their schoolwork as they progress to higher grades. Conversely, children who develop the habit of reading thoughtfully from a young age can fully cultivate the ability to grasp both the linguistic and non-linguistic meanings of various literary works, along with high-level "knowledge reading" skills, even as they grow older. There is an important point here. Unconditional extensive reading does not directly lead to improved grades. Many students struggle to solve passages on middle school Korean exams, high school mock exams, or the CSAT despite reading extensively. This is because they lack the ability to read a passage to the end within a fixed time limit, grasp its hidden intentions and meanings, and then memorize the content. This ability is cultivated from a young age through training to fully understand non-verbal (visual) or verbal symbols, metaphors, and implied meanings. I hope that when our children face the formidable threshold of college entrance exams, they will not remember their school days as painful experiences where studying was simply too difficult and tedious. Instead, I hope they will remember that the schoolwork, which became increasingly difficult as they progressed through the grades, actually became a new challenge because they had the time to experience new knowledge and feel the worlds of diverse emotions and personalities through books. I will strive to be a teacher who demonstrates that reading can serve as the foundation, enabling them to grow into children who can bravely throw themselves toward the true dreams of life that lie beyond college entrance exams.
